Papaver Rhoeas – Common Poppy
The common poppy is our beloved ‘Anzac poppy’. Bright scarlet with a black spot in the base of each petal, it is at its most beautiful when sown generously for a beautiful meadow effect as seen in the fields of England and Europe.
Poppies are frost tolerant and germinate best in cool weather and soil. Sow your poppy seed directly early in Spring. In warm areas, you can sow poppies in Autumn – seedlings will begin to grow early the following spring. Choose a sheltered sunny position with light well drained soil. Mix the very fine seed with sand prior to sowing for a more even spread.
